This was a project I spent hundreds of hours on with my childhood friends, Nukul Rajpoot (of MSc Comp Sci) and Soham Ghosh (of Medicine) during the summer of 2024.
Lots of video games have community-run marketplaces where players trade items (basically mini economies driven entirely by gamers). Nukul, Soham and I had grown up playing these types of games, and we knew $Millions were being traded everyday in them. We were able to access this trading data via Steam’s API (after jumping through a few hoops hehe). so Nukul, Soham, and I set out to accomplish 2 lofty things:
- build a visualisation tool for the CS:GO market to help players make smarter trades.
- determine if it is possible to create a profitable trading strategy using a portfolio of skins (in-game commodities), and publish a paper on our findings
